Biography:
Miguel comes to the Pump Jacks already highly-touted. After an All-American senior season in 2009 at La Joya High School in Palm View, TX, Miguel was selected by the Washington Nationals in the fifth round of the draft. That immediately makes him the highest-drafted player ever to wear a Pump Jacks uniform. He didn’t sign with the Nationals, instead choosing to attend San Jacinto College.
At San Jacinto, Miguel was one of the top starting pitchers in the country. He posted a 14-2 record with a 2.51 ERA to go along with 97 K’s in 96.2 innings pitched. His performance and abilities, which include a fastball that touches the low 90’s, excellent curve and good command, earned him first-team All-American honors yet again, this time at the junior college level.
Miguel was also tabbed by Baseball America on the publication’s list of top prospects for the 2010 draft. He was one of eight junior college players on the list.
The San Diego Padres thought enough of Miguel to draft him in the 13th round in June. He spent time in 2010 with the Falmouth Commodores of the Cape Cod League prior joining the Pump Jacks.
At La Joya, Miguel fanned over 400 batters in his four-year career. He had 28 career wins and was selected All-Valley three times. During his senior year, Miguel was 7-1 with four saves and a 0.12 ERA. He struck out 98 batters in 56 innings against just 14 walks. He also hit .347 on his way to all-state honors.
